PUBS AND CLUBS Sunday 8th August 2004 saw Twickenham's second annual festival of comedy rowing take place with great success on the stretch of water behind Eel Pie Island.
Lots of novice crews got their first chance to race each other, after some intense coaching from Club members. Amidst the usual clashes, crashes, crabs and air strokes during the day, the winners emerged.
The 4's final was a dead heat between SUZE AND THE BALDIES [Corin Margetson, Suzanne Dungey, Neil Armstrong, David Barker coached / coxed by Kate Oliver] and THE WINNIN' CREW [Mark Ashton Cath Forsaith, James Mendez, Judith Hawke coched / coxed by Carol Roche]
Suze & The Baldies went on to win the re-row by 1/2 length.
The Eights final was between the Cool Runnings / Madd Hatterscombination [Coaches John Wastnage / Di Harcourt] and Poke & Paul's [nameless?] crew, ably assisted by Iain McMillan, who were paired up with James Sirmon's Waving not Drowning.
The Waving crew were later seen waving pots around, having won by just over a length [Jenny Casson, Fiona Noblet, Andy Hucklesby Gareth Wright, Rosie Williams,Kathryn Essex, Liz Powditch and Nessy Gray]
Pics and video clips to follow... when i manage to get them off the camera...

BOAT NAMING The official naming ceremony for the new Empacher VIII, will be Sunday 23 May, 12.30pm [that's the day after Twix regatta]
The boat will be named after Arthur Couchman, (believed to have been) last surviving member of the last TwRC crew to make the final of the Thames Cup [1950-squiggily something] His widow, daughter and two grand-daughters are due to attend as guests.
The boat name will be his nickname, Long'un - apparently he was a bit lanky compared to the rest of the crew!!!

BLAZERS A project is in hand to produce a new batch of ‘traditional’ club blazers, in time for Henley this year.
The April Committee meeting received outline details of the new proposals from Bob Hurles [see spec below] with a request that the design should be adopted as the ‘official’ club blazer. The current rules no longer prescribe exact designs for club kit, merely stating that the colours shall be dark blue and magenta.
The blazers are being produced by Collier & Robinson of Henley. The jackets will be single breasted, with no rear vent. A tailored version will be available for ladies. Estimated cost is approximately £180 - £200, depending on numbers, and including an allowance for club buttons. Considering a plain blue blazer will set you back £100+ from the likes of M&S, this looks like a pretty good deal.
Kristie Robinson of Collier & Robinson is due to visit the club to take individual measurements on Wednesday evening 21st April. Each jacket will be individually fitted, so you will need to be measured if you want one [no off-the-peg, 44-regular nonsense!]
If you would like a fitting, please notify your interest in advance, c/o Bob Hurles [hurles AT btinternet DOT com]
TwRC Club Blazer proposed spec. – dark blue, with magenta trim:
The recommended material, 100% wool barathea, is a fine cloth, but is not the traditional felt material, which is now apparently out of favour due to its poor wearing qualities and its heavy weight.
The polyester trim (silk is not durable enough) will be just under an inch all round, and the same on the sleeves. We can choose magenta or blue lining to match. [note - the ‘true’ magenta is a source of eternal debate in the club! In this case, the proposed sample is a ‘pantone’ magenta, which is a nice bright colour, closer to the blades & kit colour than the deep burgundy of the last batch of silk ties – so you’ll probably need a new tie too……]
The pocket will not have a top edge trim, but will feature a badge in magenta silk braid to the same design as the crossed oars club buttons, [the letters T R C arranged at 12, 9 and 3 o’clock positions respectively] with 1860 added at the 6 o’clock position. The badge will be circled in rope braiding, like the button design [but without the button’s ‘Twickenham Rowing Club’ surrounding text]
There will be two small buttons per cuff, and two large on the front. Individuals will have to buy the buttons from the club, for free-issue to the tailors.

FAREWELL TO HILDEGARD Wednesday evening at the clubhouse, saw a presentation to long time member, Hildegard McCarthy, who is moving to Switzerland with her husband Brian to be near their daughter Petrea and her family.
The presentation was to give a big thankyou to Hildegard & Brian for everything they have done for TwRC over the years. Hildegard has been a stalwart of the women's section, coaching novice and junior crews for some years and always finding time to find blades or boats so novices could get out on the water, while Brian has done many maintenance jobs around the Club and helped keep it standing!!!
